Born Ashly Robinson, the 31-year-old Miami-based content creator built a devoted following through her warm personality and aspirational “soft life” content. Her feed was full of beautiful travel, glowing style, and the kind of joy that made people genuinely root for her.

For her 31st birthday, Ashlee and her boyfriend Joseph McCann traveled to Zanzibar, Tanzania — a stunning island destination that seemed like the perfect backdrop for a new chapter. And for a moment, it truly was. McCann got down on one knee and proposed during the trip, making it a celebration on two fronts.
Her last Instagram post captured that magic perfectly — a photo of her feeding a giraffe, surrounded by rose petals spelling out “HBD Ashlee,” with a caption that now feels painfully ironic: “Chapter 31 and I’m exactly where I need to be.”

On the evening of April 8, something went terribly wrong. A heated argument broke out between Ashlee and McCann at the Zuri Zanzibar resort, serious enough that other guests alerted hotel staff. The couple was separated, with McCann moved to a different villa roughly ten minutes away on foot.
A few hours later, Ashlee was found unresponsive in her room.
She was rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to another facility, where she was pronounced dead on April 9. A hospital medical report noted an unidentified mark around her neck — a detail that immediately raised red flags for everyone who heard it.

Zanzibar authorities initially ruled the death a suicide, but Ashlee’s family has pushed back on that conclusion with everything they have.
Her mother, Yolanda Denise Endres, spoke with raw emotion about the daughter she lost, making it clear that nothing in Ashlee’s behaviour suggested she was in crisis. Her father Harry Robinson echoed the same disbelief, describing the loss as a whirlwind of uncertainty, mystery, anger, and sadness all at once.
The family recalled that Ashlee had FaceTimed them during the trip, excited and glowing about her vacation and engagement. To them, a woman that happy simply does not add up to the official story they’ve been given.
In the most significant development since Ashlee’s death, Tanzanian investigators confirmed they are holding Joseph McCann for further questioning. His passport has been confiscated while authorities await the results of a formal autopsy. No charges have been filed, and McCann has not been officially named a suspect — but the fact that he is being prevented from leaving the country speaks volumes about where the investigation is headed.
What has deepened the family’s concern is that McCann has reportedly gone silent since Ashlee’s death, cutting off communication with her loved ones entirely. For a man who was supposedly the closest person to her in her final hours, that silence has been described as deeply unsettling.
Ashlee’s parents have refused to sit and wait. They travelled to Washington D.C. to press the U.S. Embassy for information and are now preparing to fly to Zanzibar themselves to demand answers face to face. Their message has been consistent and unwavering — they are not looking for drama, they simply want the truth about what happened to their daughter.
The Zanzibar government has urged the public to allow the investigation to run its course, and the Zuri Zanzibar resort has stated it is cooperating fully with local and U.S. authorities.
Online, Ashlee’s community has transformed into something between a memorial and a movement. Hundreds of thousands of people — particularly Black women who saw themselves in her journey — are sharing her story, asking hard questions, and making clear that she will not be forgotten or dismissed.
Ashlee Jenae worked hard to build a life that looked like a dream. She deserved to live it.
The autopsy results are still pending. The investigation is ongoing. And a family — along with an entire online community — is watching and waiting for justice.
This is a developing story. Updates will be added as new information is released.
