The Jewel in the Street Program (JITSP) is a life-transforming social empowerment initiative under the Africa Initiative Impact Program (AIIP). It is designed to uplift vulnerable girls and women—especially head porters (Kayayei), street hawkers, domestic escapees, and economically displaced young women—by restoring their dignity and helping them realize their potential through training, mentorship, and structured reintegration into society.
These “jewels” of the street are often forgotten, unseen, and unheard. JITSP seeks to recognize their worth, refine their skills, and reintroduce them to the world as empowered, skilled, and confident contributors to Africa’s development.
Program Objectives
Identify and Rescue
Actively engage girls on the street, provide immediate support, counseling, and temporary shelter.
Rehabilitate and Heal
Offer psychosocial support, trauma recovery sessions, and life coaching to heal emotional wounds.
Skill and Educate
Train participants in vocational skills such as fashion design, media, cosmetology, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship.
Mentor and Empower
Pair each participant with mentors who guide, encourage, and walk with them through their transformation journey.
Reintegrate and Sustain
Facilitate safe reintegration into society, employment opportunities, and, where possible, family reunification or independent living.
Target Groups
- Street girls (Kayayei)
- Teenage mothers
- Domestic abuse and trafficking survivors
- Migrant girls and displaced youth
- School dropouts
- Vulnerable girls in underserved urban areas
JITSP is more than a rescue mission. It is a celebration of potential rediscovered.
Under AIIP, the Jewel in the Street Program transforms the overlooked into the outstanding, turning scars into stories of strength and shame into shimmers of greatness.
They were once hidden in plain sight. Now they are refined, redefined, and ready.
